Dolly Parton Bear

Dolly Parton, the Park's 75th Anniversary Ambassador, contributed this creation!

Lamar Alexander Bear

Special 75th Anniversary Bear signed by Lamar Alexander

Jim Gray Bear

Smokies 75th Anniversary Bear painted by Jim Gray

Bears are indigenous to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

In honor of the 75th anniversary, we felt it was only fitting to ask some two-legged Smokies icons to create their interpretations of this treasured resident of the park community.

Dolly's bear incorporates Dolly's signature look, from the impossibly long lashes, to the platimun "do", to the, oh, well - YOU KNOW!

Lamar Alexander's bear looks right at home in a red plaid shirt, perched atop a piano keyboard, and next to a pot of "Honey".

Renowned artist Jim Gray's creation features a Mt. LeConte vista with small clay bears perched at whimsical angles. It's a unique Jim Gray original in oil that is unlike anything he's ever done.

2006 Evergreen Ball
The burning question in everyone’s minds after the second annual Evergreen Ball in January 2005 was “How do we top bringing a horse into Cherokee Country Club?” What could be bigger and better than that?

Friends of the Smokies board, staff, and volunteers set to working on another premier auction item with the “WOW” factor of Crucible, the Egyptian Arabian stallion that was offered in the 2005 Evergreen Ball live auction. Before long, the developers of the Estates at Norton Creek provided the answer. Cathy Ackermann & Tommy Walker and Robin & DeAnn Turner, longtime supporters of Friends of the Smokies, offered a 1.5 acre mountaintop lot in the gated community of the Estates at Norton Creek, a Gatlinburg community which borders the Park. The lot at the Estates at Norton Creek was offered alongside an impressive selection of live auction items in 2006.

For the third year in a row, the Evergreen Ball drew more than 400 attendees. For the first time, revenue from the Evergreen Ball exceeded $300,000. The volunteer leadership committee’s hard work alongside the Friends staff once again produced an evening of elegance.

2005 Evergreen Ball
With the overwhelming success of the first Friends of the Smokies Evergreen Ball in 2004, there was no question that there would be more to come! Soon after the conclusion of the first Evergreen Ball, the Friends board and staff began planning for 2005.

During the planning process, a unique opportunity came from Paradise Arabians in Georgia. Owners Gary and Wanda Kenworthy offered an Arabian stallion from their farm as a live auction item for the 2nd Annual Evergreen Ball. A horse. Of course. But how to get it into Cherokee Country Club? The generosity of all associated with the Evergreen Ball is continually amazing. People seem to want to help however they can. When the Friends’ asked if a horse could come into the ballroom at Cherokee during the live auction, Cherokee Country Club said “yes”. So, the Friends staff rolled out the red carpet (literally) and this fine Arabian stallion walked into the ballroom, very regally, and with every bit as much elegance as those clad in ties, tails, and sequins that night.

The 2005 Ball was covered by the Knoxville News Sentinel. To read Barbara Aston Wash’s column, click here. The Evergreen Ball has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our committee chairs, committee members, and all of the volunteers are more important than ever.

The celebration continues to grow each year - in sponsorship, participation, revenue, generosity, and EXCITEMENT.

2004 Evergreen Ball
In 2003 the board and staff of Friends of the Smokies endeavored to find the right way to reach out to the many, many generous Friends of the Smokies residing in Knoxville and its surrounding communities. While having numerous fundraising events for the Park’s benefit, at that time Friends of the Smokies did not have a “Knoxville event”. Friends President Jim Hart and Special Projects Director Lauren Gass talked to many Friends supporters, and decided to try a gala, with dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Thus the Evergreen Ball was born.

Planning began in earnest in fall of 2003 for the event date of January 24, 2004. With the help of the Ball’s Honorary Chairperson Dee Haslam, and Co-Chairs Amye King and LeaAnne Williams, Friends was able to recruit many talented and capable individuals to assist with all of the details. The magic of the first Evergreen Ball would not have been possible without tremendous volunteer support from the Evergreen Ball Committee Chairs & Members, as well as the army of Trailblazers who were on-hand during the Ball to make sure that everything ran smoothly.

Our committee chairs, committee members, and all of the volunteers are more important than ever, and through their efforts the celebration will grow each year - in sponsorship, participation, revenue, generosity, and EXCITEMENT.
